Visiting Nursing Services
Booking in to have a baby at Mansfield Hospital

Your local doctor will ask you to come to the hospital to book in, usually before 20 weeks gestation.

Our Ward Clerk will arrange your admission paperwork and make an appointment for you to see one of our midwives to discuss your ideas and wishes for your labour and post natal care. Our Ward Clerk can also book you in for antenatal classes at this time should you choose to participate.

Private and public beds at Mansfield Hospital, which will I get?
You can choose to be admitted as a public or private patient.

Public patients do not pay for any inpatient services but will be charged for ‘extras' such as television hire, newspapers and phone usage.

Private patients will also not be charged for any out-of-pocket expenses for their stay in hospital. Mansfield District Hospital is registered as a Billing Agent with the Health Insurance Commission; this enables us to manage the payment of all your bills and the hospital will cover any gaps or excesses. Private patients will be given a single room (only if available) and receive free television hire, newspaper and telephone usage (local calls only). By choosing to go private, the hospital will benefit and you will not have to pay any more than if you were admitted as a public patient.

I need to stay in Mansfield while someone is in hospital, what are the options?
The Mansfield Hospital does not provide accommodation for anyone other than patients.

As a large tourist area, Mansfield and the surrounding district has many and varied types of accommodation at reasonable cost. For further information, contact the Mansfield Visitors Information Centre on (03) 5775 7000.

Outpatient information
Outpatient services are provided for x-rays, ultrasounds, physiotherapy (HACC clients only) and podiatry (private patients only).

Bookings for x-ray and ultrasound should be made via your doctor or, following a referral by your doctor, at the hospital's general office in person or by phone on (03) 5775 2111.

Physiotherapy and podiatry bookings can also be made through our general office in person or by phone on (03) 5775 2111.

Coming to stay in hospital, what to bring
What to bring for your stay in hospital:

  • Night attire
  • Slippers
  • Soap
  • Toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, etc.
  • Box of tissues
  • Men - shaving kit
  • Children - favourite toy
  • Sufficient cash for incidental items. Do not bring large sums of money or articles of value, as the hospital does not accept liability for loss of personal articles.
Due to a shortage of storage space it would be helpful if a relative or friend could take your suitcase home.

When should I go to Accident & Emergency?
If you had been involved in an accident and have been injured or are suffering from an acute episode, you should come to the accident and emergency department.

If you are unsure if you should attend, please telephone your local doctor in the first instance and the hospital in the second instance for advice.

The accident and emergency department is an unfunded department, staffed by local GPs, and you will incur a cost for being seen by a doctor. You will also incur a cost if you require additional tests, such as x-rays, and will be billed directly by the local medical clinics.

A schedule of fees will be given to you on arrival in the department before the doctor is notified of your presentation. Please note that you may not necessarily be seen by a doctor if it is not an emergency and may be asked to make an appointment at your local medical clinic the next working day.

Donations to Mansfield Hospital
We rely on donations to purchase much needed equipment for patients/residents and to replace equipment because we are not adequately funded for capital items. Each year we require over $100,000 worth of donations to keep a reasonably adequate equipment replacement program going. Unfortunately, our annual donations usually total under the $100,000 mark and items have to be carried over into the following financial year. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

All donations are receipted and letters or certificates of appreciation are forwarded to donors. We have a capital equipment and replacement budget that is devised each year that specifically identifies the priority items for that financial year. Smaller donations are ‘pooled' to put towards the total cost of identified items. Larger donations are often donated for a specific item on the list.

All donations go towards capital items such as heart monitors, patient trolleys and operating theatre equipment and do not go into operating accounts.

You may ask for your donation to be put towards a specific item listed on our capital replacement register. If the item you request is not on the list, we are always happy to consider your suggestion.

Should you break your leg, have a heart attack, develop pneumonia, require a hernia repair, be having a baby, or requiring end of life care, the hospital is there to provide all those things to the community. The Hospital needs to keep upgrading its equipment and facilities to ensure you and your family receive the highest possible standard of care and treatment and your donations enable us to do just that. That's why we need your help. Whether financial or ‘in kind', donations are vital to our continued survival.

What information will kept about me?
Information is collected during your (or your child's) visit to hospital to help with your care. For example: your age, symptoms, previous illness or medication may all play a role in your current care and will be collected by hospital staff.

Other information collected and stored includes, for example, your name, address, gender, main language spoken and details of your local doctor. Collection is important as it helps us to plan your treatment whilst in hospital and after discharge.

Each time you attend hospital, information about you will be updated. We aim to keep your information accurate and up to date at all times to make sure the best possible care and service can be provided. Please let a staff member know or contact us when your details, such as address or local doctor, change.
